A week ago, Shreyas Mandlik was hospitalised for a bout of fever. On Tuesday, the 12-year-old from Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) made sure the excitement amongst his side hit fever pitch, smashing an unbeaten 152 against Shardashram Vidyamandir English (Dadar) that saw his side reach a healthy 383/2 at the end the opening day of the semifinals of the MSSA Giles Shield cricket tournament at Karnatak Sports Association ground on Tuesday.

"It (fever) was due to the change in weather that we usually see in February. Thankfully it wasn't very serious and I resumed training after a few days of rest. At the hospital, all that I was thinking about was the matches that were in store for me. I had to regain full fitness to make it in time. There was absolutely no way I was missing out on this match," said the Class 7 student whose knock involved 29 boundaries.

His score aside, what made Mandlik's knock even more remarkable was that he shared a century stand with each of his other partners. He was involved in a 141-run partnership with Faizan Rabbani (56) for the opening wicket, then added 113 for the second wicket with Soham Panvalkar. With Yashasvi Jaiswal batting on 89, it's been an unseparated 129-run stand for the third.

"I knew I had to keep my cool when I went out to bat. The other side are semifinalists, too, so we can't say that their bowling wasn't up to the mark. Each one of us played our part to perfection. I'm delighted to have played an important role in their innings as well," said the Virat Kohli fan.

A reason why Mandlik and his team mates stole a march on their opponents can be attributed to the fact that they stand a chance to meet Al Barkat (Kurla) in the final next week.

With the Kurla side beating them in the Harris Shield final last week, coach Raju Pathak didn't have to send a message across to his boys. "Each one of the boys knows about what happened last week and what can happen the next week. That's all the motivation we needed to play today."

Brief scores: Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) 383/2 (S Mandlik 152*, Y Jaiswal 89*, S Panvalkar 80, F Rabbani 56) vs Shardashram Vidyamandir English (Dadar)
