Virat Kohli's accusations of cheating against the Australians has found support from an unexpected quarter.

Steve Smith's predecessor, Michael Clarke, believed that the fact that Peter Handscomb immediately looked at the Australian dressing room upon Steve Smith's query suggested that Tuesday's incident of the Aussies seeking inputs from the dressing room for DRS might not have been just a one-off.

"My concern and my worry is that when you look at the footage of what happened with Steve Smith, Peter Handscomb actually suggests to Steve Smith to turn around and have a look at the support staff. If it is only a one-off, I don't think that would have happened," the former Australia captain told a television channel.

"The fact that Peter Handscomb is even thinking about telling the Australian captain to turn around and look to the support staff, I've got my concerns," he added.

Former India cricketers, meanwhile, have lashed out at Smith for Tuesday's episode, saying it was totally against the spirit of the game.

"… it was so disappointing seeing Australian team's captain behaviour on field today. Totally against the spirit of this game," legendary India all-rounder Kapil Dev tweeted.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman tweeted: "Really disappointed with the way @stevesmith49 looked @ the dressing room 2 take a review.Totally against the spirit of the game #INDvsAUS."

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take action against the Australian skipper, though the ICC rules for DRS lay down no punishment for taking inputs from the dressing room.

"If the umpires themselves saw Smith infringing on DRS rules then they must report and take action. The umpires and match referee must ensure this doesn't happen in future,\" Ganguly was quoted as saying by a television channel.

However, former England captain Michael Vaughan disagreed, saying the matter should end after Smith admitted to a "brain fade".

"Let's move on ... @stevesmith49 has admitted he had a 'Brain Fade' .. no need to take it any further ... Was a Great Test match .. #NuffSaid," Vaughan tweeted.

In another contrasting view, ex-Aussie pacer Jason Gillespie called for DRS to be taken away from the players' hands itself.

"Is it simpler to take decision making out of the players hands and give that job to the umpires? #DRS #3rdUmpire #NotaTacticalTool," he tweeted.
