English midfielder Frank Lampard's contract with Manchester City has been extended by the club until the end of the season, as the veteran footballer's deal from New York City was due to expire on 31 December.

However, Lampard would now stay until the summer and miss the start of the MLS season. The midfielder is available to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Thursday.

The former England international, who has scored six goals in 17 appearances for City this season, signed for New York after being released by Chelsea last June and a New York City spokesperson has stated that new starting date in the US would be confirmed as the Premier League and MLS seasons unfold, the BBC reported.

New York City FC director of football Claudio Reyna said that Lampard is a star and it is no surprise City is rewarded by his contributions on the field every single day.

Reyna further said that the midfielder is eager to get to New York once his commitment ends in England and would be available to play on arrival as a permanent member of the squad, given the he would come to City having played at the highest level.
