It's important to choose secure passwords.

When it comes to personal data, you can't be too careful when using the Internet. Here are a few simple ways of keeping your personal data and identity safe, both with online services and on your computer.
You should definitely switch all your most important online accounts, such as email accounts and social media profiles, to two-step authentication. This means that each connection or log-in will need to be verified by text message or email, as well as with the traditional password. Two-step authentication also has the advantage of warning you in the event of an intrusion. You'll then know it's time to change your password.
It's always surprising to hear just how many internet users still use "123456" or "password" as passwords on websites and online services in 2016. You can improve security by finding a series of letters, numbers, and symbols that's relatively complex, but which can be easily remembered. Try using the first letters of a phrase or a song title, for example. Finally, it's important never to use the same password twice and to make sure you change passwords regularly, once per quarter, for example.
Fans of messaging who don't want their conversations being intercepted or pirated can use apps that automatically encrypt communications. WhatsApp and Signal are two of the most popular. However, the apps don't make users entirely anonymous; they just ensure their messages can't be deciphered.
Although most web browsers now have a "Private" or "Incognito" mode, they don't ensure anonymity, as the IP address linked to the internet connection can still be recognized by the websites you visit. For truly incognito web browsing, look for an alternative solution such as Tor, which uses the decentralized, anonymous network of the same name. In theory, this lets users remain totally untraceable on the web.
Did you know that it's possible to take control of a computer remotely? That's why it's strongly recommended to protect all types of files stored on hard drives with data encryption. To do this, simply use the tools already available from Microsoft for Windows (BitLocker) and Apple for MacOS (FileVault). It's also wise to cover your Webcam, as this could be accessed remotely by hackers who could be watching you without you knowing. Even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg takes this precaution!
