The state government’s decision to introduce the 90:10 reservation policy has left students of other boards like the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) confused and nervous. City principals, however, feel that there is no need to hit the panic button as students have other options.

Students who have cleared their Std X from other boards are eligible to apply for International Cambridge A Levels (equivalent to Std 11 and 12). “Students from other boards are welcome to join the Cambridge A levels. There are no cut offs or minimum percentage to be acquired in Std X to join A levels. We conduct few interviews to assess the student’s aptitude and ability to cope with the curriculum,” said Deepa Bhushan, curriculum head, Billabong Group of Schools.

The Cambridge International Examination (CIE) students also have the freedom to select the subjects of their choice. They either follow a broad course of study or specialise in a particular area of their interest. Moreover, the University of Mumbai had last year granted acceptance and equivalence to a combination of CIE’s Advanced (A) and Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level courses for admission to professional programmes like Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Pharmacy.

As per a notification issued by the varsity, students who have passed mathematics, physics at A level and Chemistry at AS level will be considered eligible for Bachelor of Engineering and a student who has passed mathematics, chemistry at A level and physics at AS level will be considered eligible for Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. The circular also stated that students who passed mathematics, chemistry at A level and physics/biology at AS level will be considered eligible for BPharma course.

“Over the past year more Indian universities have accepted CIE qualifications for admission. The acceptance of A and AS levels is a big step and shall assist thousands of CIE students in appearing for the entrance examination and taking admission to the desired courses,” said Ian Chambers, CIE regional manager, South Asia.

Rustomjee International School at Dahisar which offers both A levels in science for students after Std X conducts a diagnostic test to assess a student’s potential. “Our admissions are open and we do not consider marks as the be-all and end-all. We have several students in our A-level batch who are planning to appear for engineering exams such as IIT and MH-CET. The A-level syllabus covers the MH-CET syllabus to a significant extent. This will be useful for all the students preparing for their competitive entrance examination,” said Hanif Kanjer, director, Rustomjee Cambridge International School and Junior College, Dahisar.
