Watching an NBA game is almost like going to a multiplex to watch a Hindi film. There is so much tamasha going on, you almost feel at home. The package NBA offers suits us perfectly. The game is just 48 minutes long. There’s music, lots of pretty girls dancing, celebrities watching from the sidelines, a dozen contests and prizes to be won during breaks and a lot of freebies on offer. What more can we want on a day out with family!

Take Game 2 of the NBA finals at the Staples Center, here in Los Angeles. The Orlando Magic lost to the Los Angeles lakers 101-96 in overtime after coming within inches of winning the game – Courtney Lee’s missed layup attempt at the fourth-quarter buzzer had the scores tied with five minutes of overtime to be played.

Excitement of a closely fought game alright, the event was accessorised heavily. To start with, American idol Kris Allen sang the national anthem. Then at every break, lithesome Laker girls twirled and twisted to lead the cheer in the house. Contests like ‘sizzling fan of the day’, ‘take a shot’ were amusing to watch. In the former, the wackiest fan on camera won the prize. In the latter, a fan was randomly selected to shoot a basket from the halfway mark to win over a $100,000.

The crowd at Staples was more than mighty pleased on Sunday, as in this razzmatazz, Lakers had another important win under their belt. Kobe Bryant again starred in his team’s effort in their overtime win to take a lead of 2-0 in the finals. Bryant was the leader on the score board with 29 points, although his side weren’t as dominant as they were in their 100-75 victory in the opening game on Thursday.

Pau Gasol, 24 points and 10 rebounds, scored seven of the Lakers’ 13 points in the overtime. “We missed it. What can I say! We missed it,” said Stan van Gundy, Orlando magic coach, on Lee’s missed shot. “We tried everything. What can I say? You keep throwing things at the wall and hope that something sticks.”

The Magics now face an uphill task, even though the next three games of the series will be their home game. Coach Gundy sounded optimistic. “A series can change. You’ve got to take it one game at a time.” Kobe, who didn’t have as effortless a night as he did on Thursday when he scored 40 points, looked to struggle a bit but eventually scored 29 points in the game. He, however, is in no mood to relax.

“It’s not done yet. Is it?” he replied when asked why he still didn’t look too happy. Tuesday’s another game, another day. Magic will want a win to stay alive and Lakers would want to consolidate their position with another win. For the fans, meanwhile, the beer keeps flowing and the entertainment never stops.
