Within barely four months of spending Rs eight crore on purchase of 168 new PCR vans, the Delhi Police is again on a look out for new ones realising that the modified vehicles did not fit their daily needs.

After finding faults in the new Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles, the Delhi Police is considering to replace them phase-wise, sources said. This was because there was less space between seats and roof of the new modified vehicles making it uncomfortable for
those sitting inside, particularly in the rear, they said.

"Most of our men have complained that they often hurt their heads while sitting at the back because of modifications in its interior suggested by the police administration," sources said. These PCR vans are also uncomfortable in taking victims
or injured persons to hospital.

A five-member committee headed by a Joint Commissioner of Police rank officer has been set up to select new vehicles. The Delhi Police plans to increase the number of PCR vans to 1,000 before Commonwealth Games scheduled here next year. At present there are 630 PCR vans -- 168 Tavera, 205 Qualis and 257 Maruti Gypsy -- that are either stationed or mobile at almost all the key posts across the city.

Sources said a letter of intent has already been sent to Union Home Ministry for purchase of additional vehicles ahead of the Commonwealth Games. They said PCR vans which are not in good condition would be replaced first followed by old vans in a phased manner.

Recently, the department has deputed women constables in most of the PCR vans. As many as 45,398 injured persons -- 17,012 in road accidents and 28,386 in other incidents -- were taken to hospital by the PCR staff last year.
