Indian Premier League (IPL) fever has reached its zenith among youngsters. So what if Gujarat does not have its own IPL team? How does it matter if the IPL series is not being conducted in India? The young and true cheerleaders of cricket are having a gala time cheering up their favourite team, not only by watching it but by donning the attires of that particular team which they are cheering for. Amdavadi youngsters have developed a craze for buying T-shirts, caps, shoes and floaters of their favourite team. Being sold by big brands, these stuff are also status symbols.

Adidas has a tie-up with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils. The stores of Adidas in Ahmedabad are having a tough time meeting the demands of cricket enthusiasts. Store manager at the CG Road outlet, Bharat Prajapati says, “T-shirts of Mumbai Indians are selling fast among younger generation. Earlier, limited stock was ordered by Ahmedabad stores, but looking at the demand we had to order more.” Store manager at the Adidas outlet on SG Highway has a long list of around 30 to 40 people waiting to buy these T-shirts when fresh stock arrives.

Liking for the team Mumbai Indians is increasing madly because of Sachin Tendulkar as a player, and Mukesh Ambani as the owner who is the sole Gujarati to own an IPL team. Though Shahrukh’s team was popular among cricket fans initially, it has now lost the charm as the team is no more in the series.

However, about the initial sales of the team’s T-shirts and shoes, store manager at Shivranjani store of Reebok says, “This time the craze of buying team stuff is more compared to last time. The colour black and golden has gone down well with people. Moreover, the craze took off greatly as it was SRK’s team.”

In Vadodara, Ashish Shah, salesperson of a showroom at Race Course, said, “The demand for IPL T-shirts is pretty high. Now with the tournament entering the last lap, we hope to do brisk business in the coming days.”

“Not only boys but girls also come to get IPL T-shirts. Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab cricket gear is more popular among girls. Other accessories such as caps, shoes etc are also in demand,” said Manish Sharma, a sales executive at a showroom in Alkapuri.
Along with branded items, unbranded ones are also in high demand. A large number of cricket fans  are showing their support for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and other teams. “Most of the unbranded IPL T-shirts come from Mumbai and Delhi. An unbranded T-shirt comes for Rs150 and upwards, which is almost half than the prices of branded ones,” said another shopkeeper at Raopura.
