Following their first match blues against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings bounced back with a 92-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in their second match of the DLF Indian Premier League in Port Elizabeth on Monday. Former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden smashed a blistering 35-ball 65 to propel CSK to a mammoth 179 and in reply the RCB were bundled out for 87 in inside 16 overs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore needed someone like Matthew Hayden to fire atop the order but they lost makeshift opener Praveen Kumar for nought in the very first over and were in trouble at the outset.

Kallis joined Uthappa to take the score to 40, but the Proteas allrounder departed after scoring 24 off 19 balls with Uthappa following him after adding 20 off 19. Ross Taylor (1), captain Kevin Pietersen (0), Rahul Dravid (16), Virat Kohli (11) and Rajesh Bishnoi (0) didn’t do much as the Bangalore side were left reeling at 66-7. They slumped further to 78 for nine and were ultimately shot out for 87.

Muttiah Muralitharan was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming three wickets of Uthappa, Pietersen and Bishnoi. Lakshmipathy Balaji took a couple while Andrew Flintoff, Albie Morkel, MS Gony and Joginder Sharma bagged one apiece.

Earlier, the Chennai side began on a rollicking note with Hayden and Parthiv Patel sharing an opening stand off 106 after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat and that set the momentum of the innings.

The duo breezed away to 50 runs in just 29 balls with 20 runs coming from the fifth over bowled by Kallis with Hayden hitting three fours and a six. RCB gave away too many boundaries for their comfort with the run rate rising more than 10 and CSK reaching 106 for no loss after 10 overs. Captain Kevin Pietersen broke the opening partnership bowling Patel from his first ball for 30 (2X4; 1X6).

Later on, Hayden failed to beat a Rahul Dravid direct throw to see his side reduced to 106 for two. Dhoni did not stay for long as he was out for 16 after facing 14 balls to give the first wicket to Praveen Kumar who also scalped Suresh Raina (28; 1X1 1X6).

Andrew Flintoff (22 off 13) gave some fireworks towards the end to take 14 runs off last over which also saw Albie Morkel dismissed last ball of innings off Steyn.
