After BJP leader Varun Gandhi, it’s Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh Yadav’s turn to invite the election commission’s (EC’s) wrath.

Singh allegedly threatened Ministhy S, the district magistrate of Mainpuri, the seat from where he is contesting, in his speech at an election meeting on Monday.

“She (Ministhy) is a woman and that is why I am not making any comments on her. She should get her brain checked and should be aware of the fact that Mulayam is contesting from here (Mainpuri)”, Singh was shown by local news channels as saying at the rally.

The latest episode is another one in a long list of violations of code of conduct in Uttar Pradesh.  The model code of conduct came into force on March 2 with the announcement of the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections, and already UP has logged close to a dozen cases of violation of the election code, the Representation of the People Act and various sections of the IPC dealing with polls.

UP additional chief electoral officer Amrit Abhijat told reporters here on Tuesday that Ministhy had submitted a report on Mulayam’s speech to the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO). “The matter has been forwarded to the Election Commission of India (ECI),” he said.
A CD containing Mulayam’s speech has also been sent to the ECI, the official said.

Sources said Mulayam had said in his speech that he respected the DM since she was a woman but she should mend her ways or be ready to face the consequences. The DM had reportedly warned SP workers that their arms licences would be cancelled.
Some local SP leaders reportedly complained to Mulayam that the DM had also declared that she would order re-election in all booths where polling was more than 70%.

During his allegedly hardhitting speech targeting the district administration, Mulayam also lashed out at district superintendent of police (SP) SRS Aditya. “I know him well... he had opened fire at SP workers in Etawah,” Mulayam reportedly said.
