It’s official: Monthly parking passes soon

Though the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans a four-fold increase in parking charges, frequent users of parking lots need not worry as the civic body will soon introduce a monthly pass scheme for them with special discounts.

With this, the BMC intends to do away with the touts who have been issuing  monthly passes ‘unofficially’.
As per the scheme, users will be charged for 22 days a month and 12 hours a day. Motorists cannot park their vehicles for full 24 hours or the whole month. If any body wants to park a vehicle only at night, then there will be 50% discount in the monthly pass. The night parking monthly pass rates will be 50% less than the regular pass.

These parking rates will be applicable for multi-storey parking lots and will be increased by 5% every five years till the next 30 years. Manmohan Chonkar, corporator and member of BMC’s improvement committee,  demanded that the contract for the parking be awarded to co-operative societies of unemployed youths and not to commercial contractors.
