A man who administered electric shocks to his live-in partner has been sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs10,000 by a Delhi court which relied upon the victim's statement to hold him guilty.

Additional sessions judge Inderjeet Singh upheld a lower court's judgement awarding the sentence to Ram Chander and imposing a fine of Rs10,000 on him. The court also asked the convict to pay a compensation of Rs20,000 to the victim, Meena Yadav, who had been living with him for six years after allegedly deserting her husband.

"The judgment of the lower court is reasonable and there is no reason to modify the sentence," the court said, dismissing an appeal by Chander, 34, who hails from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Chander failed to impress the court with his charge that his paramour was a woman of easy virtue and wanted to grab his property by implicating him in the case. The judge said this was not the issue before him.

"There was no motive for the alleged incident," counsel for the convict pleaded. "The victim was putting up with him for the last six years and not with her husband Amar Pal Yadav."

Chander's advocate assailed the lower court's judgment saying it did not appreciate the fact that the first information report (FIR) in the matter was lodged on April 2, 2005, four months after the incident on the intervening night of December 17-18, 2004.

The prosecution refuted the convict's contention on the delay in registration of the FIR and said it was caused as the victim remained in hospital for 10 days after being grievously hurt.

Chander also pointed out that there was no independent witness in the case, but he failed again to get any favour from the court which said the victim's statement coupled with her medical reports were sufficient to prove the charges.

According to the prosecution, Chander, who was in a live-in relationship with Yadav, 34, had given her electric shocks by inserting a live wire in her body parts. The case was registered at the Uttam Nagar police station in West Delhi.
