Has cricketer Yuvraj Singh turned too costly for the small screen? The cricketer was allegedly approached for the dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa but the price he quoted made signing him a costly proposition. Subsequently, it is heard that the channel has found a replacement in the boxing champ Vijender Singh.

The producers of the show were keen on signing a sports personality in the same way as they had featured Ajay Jadeja and Mir Ranjan Negi in previous editions of the programme. Yuvraj’s name kept cropping up and he was then approached, the source said.

The source adds, “Since Yuvraj had made a few appearances at some events, the production house thought he would be interested in taking part in the show. We are not at all clear whether he was really interested but he quoted a huge price — the amount was more than a crore!”

In these recession-ridden times, the price came as a shock. “The channel (Sony) was not faring too well with its programmes’ low TRPs and  recession had made it tighten its budgets further. Needless to say, it could not afford the sum that was quoted. The production house then had to look for another participant from the field of sports and zeroed in on Vijender. Now, talks are going on with the boxing champ.”

Bunty Sajdeh, the image manager of Yuvraj, however chose to keep his lips locked. “If someone else has quotes and not us, I would say that’s not credible enough information. He has done two or three appearances but he is not interested in TV shows which are going to consume a lot of time. He wants to concentrate on his cricketing career,” he says.

Albert Almeida, EVP & Business Head of Sony, says, “We have approached many people for the show. The production house is dealing with the entire matter and I won’t be able to comment on this.” When quizzed whether they are in talks with Vijender, he maintained, “We are going to announce the show very soon. Till then, I wouldn’t like to disclose anything.”
