That the Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) has changed venues from the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Santacruz on account of the increased space and better infrastructure offered is a well-known fact.

Vikram Raizada of IMG said, “The unique presentation being planned at the Grand Hyatt will give designers an opportunity to display their Fall-Winter 2009 collection to an enhanced audience of potential buyers, a plethora of media and their peers in the grand spaces of the hotel.” But, perhaps what is equally interesting is the reaction the move has got. For the most part, people are happy with the possibilities that this grand venue brings with it.

With fond memories of the NCPA, Arjun Khanna says, “I will always miss the NCPA; after all, that’s where the LFW began its journey. But yes, the action has definitely shifted to the suburbs today. Be it Andheri, Lokhandwala or Bandra, the city is expanding at a fast pace.

Also, the Grand Hyatt is much closer to film studios and, of course, the airport. These things make it a great move,” he says, explaining that with the some overseas buyers wary of visiting the NCPA due to its proximity to the Oberoi (which was attacked by the terrorists), the suburbs were a ‘better idea’.

Anu Dewan, wife of Sunny Dewan whose company HDIL sponsored the first-ever couture week in India, says that perhaps now more people would be attending the LFW. “In a city like Mumbai, it’s the travelling that gets to you. Moreover, the suburbs are as dynamic as South Mumbai,” she  explains.

Pradeep Hirani feels that the new venue is just perfect. “It’s the right address for a fashion week. After all, it’s all about luxury. Now accomodation for the attendees even F&B arrangements will also be far superior.” He further adds that the suburbs have very high energy levels. “The movement and dynamism is missing in South Mumbai whereas the suburbs abound in them. So it’s not surprising that they are doing very well where the fashionable events are concerned.”

Falguni and Shane Peacock have the last word when they say, “NCPA has had its own charm. But the new venue is a place where the buyers can meet and have a proper chat. Fashion weeks are like trade fairs and luxury should be represented accordingly. In fact, we should have moved long time back.”
