Saturday, November 8, is going to be a very busy day for most CitiIndia employees as they dedicate the day to serving the community. The company’s third Global Community Day will see 1,500 employees from 28 cities and towns in India come together to participate in different programmes, aimed at benefiting the community.

The Global Community Day started as an initiative by Citi New York in 2006.  The inaugural Global Community Day saw volunteer participation of more than 30,000 employees in over 700 projects, in 100 countries. “It gives a chance for all of us to come together in a bid to do community service. It builds sustainable volunteering,” says Godwin Chellam, head of corporate affairs, CitiIndia.

While last year the theme of the Day was the environment, this year it is financial education. The volunteers will come together, along with different NGOs, to undertake various activities for the under-privileged. The programmes this year include teaching arts and crafts to the children of Akanksha Foundation; sports day for under-privileged children; financial education for women; and many other such activities.

Apart from this, CitiIndia has also started India Community Day that will be held four times a year. “Two have already been conducted, and the response from the employees has been great,” says Godwin.

The employees who actively participate in such activities are enthusiastically gearing up for Global Community Day. Sanchay Agarwal is one such employee who has been volunteering in most of CitiIndia’s initiatives from the time he joined the organisation five years ago. “Last year we went to Juhu Beach after the Chatt Puja and cleaned up the beach,” says Agarwal, adding “Through CitiIndia I got attached with Akanksha and now I am actively involved in their activities.”
