Cops say a mujahideen stole contact details from it to procure SIMs

Interrogation of the suspected members of the Indian Mujahideen (IM), who were arrested recently, has revealed that one of them, Anique Sayyed, had forged documents to procure SIM cards for his associates. Police claim that he misused details of people, posted on a matrimonial website, for the purpose.

“When we enquired about the SIM cards of the alleged IM members, we got details of two persons. One was from Mumbai while the other one was from Bangalore. They said that they were not using the numbers. They told us that they had posted their details on a matrimonial site,” said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Anique, a mobile repairer from Pune, broke down during interrogation and told the police that he was entrusted with the responsibility of getting SIM cards for the module members, Maria said.

“He told us that he had prepared proformas of documents such as passport, driving license on his computer. He used to visit matrimonial sites and then copy the details of the people from their bio-data. The same details were then used on these forged documents, which were later used to procure SIM cards,” said the senior police official.

Maria said in the past one year, Anique had procured around 40-50 SIM cards from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bangalore, Mangalore, Surat, Delhi and Secunderabad. “Anique runs a mobile phone repairing shop and therefore knew which documents were required to procure a SIM card. We have already alerted the matrimonial web site concerned about the misuse of details from their site,” he said.

Twenty persons, suspected to be members of IM had been arrested by the Mumbai crime branch for their alleged involvement in the series of blasts in the country since 2005.
