HYDERABAD: A brief but significant innings from Royal Bengal Tigers’ Hamish Marshall and skipper Craig McMillan’s 69 off 40 balls handed Delhi Giants a 35-run defeat in their ICL 20s Challenge match at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium here on Thursday evening.

Mithun Chakraborty’s Tigers now have two wins in two matches while Giants, after having won against Ahmedabad Rockets, had a disappointing day.

Chasing a target of 172 in 20 overs, the Giants could never pose a threat to the Tigers who earlier powered to 171 for seven after being put into bat. Like their batting, the Tigers were equally sharp and aggressive on the field.

McMillan, coming in at No. 4, had a party out there along with Marshall, who was looking really good before he was run out by a direct throw from Ali Murtaza.

Abhishek Jhunjhunwala again failed to deliver, giving a dolly catch to Atapattu in slips off Shane Bond.

McMillan, though, was merciless on every bowler, reaching his 50 in 36 balls with two sixes. He departed while trying to slog, miscued it and Attapattu took a comfortable catch at point.

After the skipper left, Rohan Gavaskar joined Lance Klusener, who was played a subdued role. The South African all-rounder didn’t look in prime touch.

The Delhi Giants actually got none who could steer them to such a daunting task of overcoming the mammoth target. Only Avishka Gunawardene tried his best scoring 25 from 23 balls with five fours. Dale Benkenstein (3), Marvan Atapattu (19), Syed Abbas Ali (18) and J.P. Yadav (24) had only themselves to blame as they got dismissed after
having settled down.
