Youth held while trying to sell stolen ornaments

A 22-year-old youth was arrested at Zaveri Bazar in south Mumbai while trying to sell gold ornaments worth Rs2.5 lakh he had allegedly stolen from his uncle’s home.

A 22-year-old youth was arrested at Zaveri Bazar in south Mumbai on Wednesday evening while trying to sell gold ornaments worth Rs2.5 lakh he had allegedly stolen from his uncle’s home in Goa.

Micheal Fernandez had stolen the ornaments on September 25 and had run away to Bangalore, the police said. He stayed there for three days trying to sell the ornaments. When he could not, he came to Mumbai on September 29. Here again, for two days he tried to sell the ornaments, the police said.

On Wednesday, sub-inspector Rajesh Machinder was patrolling the Zaveri Bazar area when he saw Fernandez moving in a suspicious manner carrying a rexin bag. Machinder detained him for questioning. The police checked the bag and found the ornaments, senior inspector Jayant Sarmokadam of LT Marg police station said.

Fernandez helped his uncle Minino Sequeira, 47, in his fishing trolley business at Agasaim in North Goa, inspector Vishwas Karpe of the Agasaim police station, who had come to Mumbai to take the custody of Fernandez, said.

Fernandez told the police that he wanted to live a lavish life after selling the ornaments.
