Television anchor Anu Kapoor’s mother was tricked into handing over gold ornaments worth Rs42,000 to two men pretending to be cops on Friday morning.

Kamla Kapoor, a retired teacher and resident of Lokhandwala, was on her way home from her yoga class when the two men approached her. The duo said that they were policemen and were collecting valuables from senior citizens to ensure their safety.
Dattatray Sankhe, inspector, Oshiwara police station, said, “They told Kapoor that a lady was murdered in the area and her ornaments were robbed. They said that the police was now contacting all senior citizens in the area and were helping them safeguard their belongings.”

They then asked Kapoor to remove her ornaments and wrap them in a newspaper that they were carrying, claiming that her valuables would be safe this way. Meanwhile, another couple approached the duo and gave them their ornaments, which the latter dutifully wrapped and returned to the owners.

Convinced that the two men were genuine, Kapoor handed over all her valuables to them. “They wrapped the ornaments in the newspaper and put them inside her bag. However, after walking a short distance Kapoor got suspicious. On checking, she was shocked to find that her ornaments were missing and instead the duo had cleverly placed a tobacco box and a rock in the newspaper,” said Sankhe. Kapoor then approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Based on Kapoor’s description, the police are making sketches of the three men and the woman.
