MUMBAI: Tauqeer’s mother has broken her silence for the first time since security agencies named him as the mastermind behind the serial blasts in Ahmedabad and now Delhi.
“He [Tauqeer] should come forward and prove his innocence. If he is guilty, then he should be hanged in front of his family, so that other family members are not harassed by society and investigating agencies,” said Zubeda Qureshi, mother of Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, at a press conference here on Wednesday.
“He has friends from several communities and we have never taught him hatred towards other religion. It is impossible for us to believe that he can be involved in such acts like bomb blasts,” she said.
She did not respond when asked why the family did not lodge any complaint that he was missing even after Tauqeer did not get in touch with them for so long. Her lawyer Mubin Solkar said, “The family was harassed by the ATS after the Mumbai serial train blasts in 2006, when they were questioned about Tauqeer. Maybe Tauqeer fled for fear of being tortured by the ATS. And if one police agency is harassing the family, then what is the use of lodging a complaint with the local police.”
His mother said Tauqeer got married in 1999 and in 2001 started living separately with his wife and three children at Mira Road and was not in touch with his parents. “He stopped contacting his wife in 2006. That is when we started living at Mira Road with his wife and children,” Zubeda said, adding that she was unaware whether Tauqeer was involved in any criminal activity or had any links with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.
She pointed out that there was no evidence with the police to prove that his family had made any secret attempts to contact Tauqeer.
The investigating agencies from the Intelligence Bureau to Mumbai’s Anti-Terrorism Squad are on the lookout for Tauqeer. He is believed to the main brain behind the terror e-mails being sent to the media just before the blasts in the name of Indian Mujahideen, police said.
