Issues notices to Centre, Uttar Pradesh government on coverage of Aarushi murder case

NEW DELHI: Taking a strong stance against the character assassination of 15-year-old murdered teen Aarushi Talwar of Noida and her family by an unrepentant media, the supreme court (SC) issued notices on Monday to the Union and Uttar Pradesh governments, asking them whether there's any mechanism to restrain media coverage of sub-judiceunder investigation cases.

The notices were issued on a plea by lawyer Surat Singh, who has sought a direction to the print and electronic media to maintain restraint while reporting sub-judice cases such as the Aarushi murder of May 16.

A bench headed by justice Altamas Kabir sought the authorities' response to a series of directions to protect the reputation offamilies of victims such as Aarushi.

During the live telecast of a discussion on the attitude of the media in covering the Aarushi murder case, her aged, ailing grandmother had wept bitterly and virtually prayed to the electronic media to please "leave us alone".

"Please remove your cameras and Ob vans from outside our house and let us mourn the little daughter's death", these pleadings by a grandmother sum up what many placed in
Aarushi or her parents' situation undergo at the hand of a section of the media in some parts of the country, the court said.

Earlier on August 6, the apex court had dubbed the media a "super-super investigative agency" that did "irreparable damage" to Aarushi's parents by the way they covered the charming little girl's brutal murder in her own bedroom.
