Doctor commits suicide in Jammu to protest Amarnath land revocation

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir continued to burn for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, with the Amarnath land row claiming two more lives. One person died in the valley and 33 were injured, while a man reportedly committed suicide in Jammu.

Day curfew was lifted in Srinagar and four others districts of Kashmir, but Kishwar in Jammu remained tense, though curfew was relaxed for two hours there as well. A youth was killed when security forces opened fire on protestors at Safa Kadal in old Srinagar.
Around 30 people were injured when CRPF personnel opened fire on a mob trying to ransack the 183-battalion company at Delow in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Wednesday evening. PRO Prabhakar Tripathi said, “The troops fired in self-defence.”

A mob set two police vehicles on fire at Rawalpora in Civil Lines and people unfurled Pakistani flags at a number of places in Kashmir. Processions were also held in some parts to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day.

In Jammu, retired doctor BR Khujaria committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Hira Nagar to protest the Amarnath land revocation order. “He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead,” Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti spokesman Narender Singh said.

Meanwhile, CRPF inspector general SK Jain has been summoned to Delhi by the director general. Reports say he could be shifted out.
