Deccan Express Logistics will develop them at Hyderabad, Delhi

HYDERABAD: G R Gopinath, who had stridently opposed the GMR group for its opposition to keeping the old Begumpet airport in Hyderabad open, has now joined hands with the infrastructure company.

Deccan Express Logistics, founded by Gopinath, has entered into an agreement with GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd and Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) for developing modern express cargo hubs in Hyderabad and Delhi.

The two standalone agreements are expected to become operational by January 1, 2009.

Gopinath had accused the GMR group of being monopolistic when it kept opposing plans to keep the old Begumpet airport open in Hyderabad after the launch of the new international airport on the city outskirts.

As per the agreement signed on Wednesday, Deccan Express will initially utilise the cargo terminal operated by Hyderabad Menzies Air Cargo Pvt Ltd.

Hyderabad Menzies is a joint venture between GMR Hyderabad International Airport and Menezies Aviation Plc. The venture will offer over 300 sq m within the domestic wing of the cargo terminal for the exclusive use of Deccan Express, which will develop the express cargo facility at the airport as a hub for its business in the central and southern regions of India.

Delhi International Airport will also offer over 2,000 sq m to Deccan Express at the Delhi airport for setting up of the facility. Deccan Express will develop the express cargo facility at the Delhi Airport as a hub for its business in northern India.

Operations of Deccan Express will commence from January 1, 2009, and shift to the proposed Integrated Express Terminal at both the airports when ready.

In Hyderabad, the air cargo complex has a built-in area of 14,330 sq m. The complex is a modular building with a capacity to handle cargo throughput of 100,000 mt annually.
The air cargo has dedicated cargo apron facilities both for handling regular and freighter operations.

“Our memorandum of understanding with the GMR Group will enable us to establish modern express cargo hubs in Hyderabad and Delhi, which, together with our central hub at Nagpur, will function as a distribution model facilitating highly effective consolidation and dispatch to destination in the metros and the interiors,” Gopinath said in a statement.

“Hyderabad and Delhi are the modern corporate capitals of India and also strategic gateways to other parts in south and north India. The setting up of infrastructure at these strategic locations will enable Deccan Express Logistics to establish an extensive state of the art multimodal (surface and air) storage, transportation and delivery network reaching out to every corner of India.”
