NEW DELHI: Delhi University would soon set up a centralised placement cell to attract prospective employers for recruiting its students.

The new placement cell will provide opportunities for jobs to its students from various colleges and disciplines.

"Few colleges of the university have placement cells. But the centralised cell will help students from nearly 60 colleges to have equal opportunity to get placed in companies of their choice," said Seema Mehra Parihar, Deputy Dean, Student Welfare.

The varsity is also planning to start some short-term programmes to develop the required skills among the students so that they could not be deprived of jobs just because of few shortcomings.

"We will also organise workshops and shot-term courses to inculcate communication, personality development skills among the students so that they can get their dream job easily," Parihar, who is also the in-charge of the new project, said.

According to Parihar, the cell would collect data from the eligible students and will recommend them to the recruiters as per their interests and discipline.

"Big companies from various sectors like software, pharmaceuticals, finance, humanities and life sciences are coming to the university in search of skilled employees. They have already recruited several students from our leading colleges in recent years giving them high salaries," she added.

Many companies like ICICI, HDFC, Dabur, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Infosys, GE Capital and Moolchand Hospital have already approached the varsity for recruitment, Parihar said.

"These companies are willing to offer good packages for eligible students. Last year students from some of the colleges got salary packages up to Rs 18 lakh per annum," she said, adding a large number of students were recruited with a package of Rs six lakh per annum.

The recruiters are showing interest in students from all streams including humanities, languages, sciences and mathematics as per their requirements, Parihar said. For instance, media companies are more interested in students of Political Science, History and Languages as these are supposed to be added advantage in understanding current affairs, she added.
