It becomes the first Indian film to have been bought by Walt Disney for distribution in US for home video release
This is a sort of a breakthrough for Bollywood cinema. For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, Walt Disney has bought the rights of an Indian film - Taare Zameen Par - to distribute it in the US as mainstream home video release.
Taare Zameen Par, which deals with the life of a dyslexic child and how a teacher tries to help the child get out of his handicap, was well appreciated in India and did pretty well in the US too. The film, which released in December, last year, won many awards as well in India.
Walt Disney showed interest in the film because it shows the concern of children and their upbringing. They wanted to be associated with the film because it caters to children’s issues.
Aamir Khan, the producer, director and actor of the movie, is clearly excited about the latest achievement of the film.
He says, “Yes, Disney has bought the home video rights of Taare Zameen Par. We (Aamir Khan Productions) are very happy and proud to be associated with Walt Disney. They are the best when it comes to kids. The film has done well in the US and I hope the DVDs do well too.”
However, Aamir was not ready to divulge the money involved in the deal. But according to sources, after the deal Aamir is richer by around Rs 4 crore.
