The Virani household in Bandra was stunned by the audacity of a recovery agent Vithal Pandharinath, who allegedly barged into their household, and began unplugging their television and music system on Monday morning. When the three women at home tried to stop him, he allegedly hurled abuses at them even though they tried to explain that they did not have any outstanding dues with the bank.}

“We received a phone call from the Virani household and arrested the recovery agent of the ICICI Bank. He was produced before the court on Tuesday and has been remanded to police custody for two days,” Prakash George, senior inspector of the Bandra police station, said.

“The recovery agent has been harassing me and my family since April 2007 claiming that I had dishonoured an installment of the repayment. I have the bank statements that show I have been paying the monthly installments to the bank. I have been paying the installments regularly even as the harassment has continued unabated for the last one year,” Anwar Virani, who had availed of a car loan from the bank, said.

“After we arrested Pandharinath, he told us that of the post dated cheques issued by Virani at the time of the loan disbursal, the cheque for the month of April 2007 had been misplaced by the bank. Instead of asking Virani to furnish a fresh cheque for that month, the recovery agent kept harassing the family saying they had dishonoured the cheque,” George said.

“When he first contacted us regarding the cheque being dishonoured, I produced my bank statement that showed that no cheque had bounced. He kept harassing us, insisting that I had dishonoured a payment.?” Virani said.

“Pandharinath barged into my home and said he was taking the television and music system with him for recovering the outstanding amount. The prompt action by the Bandra police prevented him from decamping with my TV and music system,” Virani said.
