MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures on Monday announced the launch of a 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' signature campaign for communal peace and harmony in association with a city-based NGO Citizen's Council for a better tomorrow (CCBT).

Significantly, UTV's upcoming film directed by Nishikant Kamat by the same name releases on August 23.

Addressing a press conference here, UTV Motion Pictures CEO Ronnie Screwvala and former Mumbai sheriff F T Khorakiwala who heads the CCBT, said the signature campaign has been initiated with the objective of reinforcing the message of communal harmony on the occasion of CCBT's 15 anniversary and release of the film 'Mumbai Meri Jaan'.

The banner with signatures would be displayed along the 5 km stretch from Nariman Point to Chowpatty on August 15.

The signature campaign banner will be put up at different places like banks, railway stations, art galleries, sports clubs and corporate houses across the city for people from various walks of life to come forward and pledge their support towards the cause of promoting communal harmony and national integration.

On August 15, all the 1,000 banners signed by the residents of Mumbai will be displayed from Hilton towers in Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty making it the world's largest signature banner supporting the cause of "Harmony versus terrorism" among the people, Screwvala and Khorakiwala said.

Khorakiwala, while speaking on the occasion, said Hindu-Muslim unity was a must for national integration.

"At the same time, it is in the interests of Muslims to come into the mainstream. The mindset also has to change. I am proud to be a Muslim and even more prouder of being an Indian Muslim," he said.

According to the former Mumbai sheriff, action, reaction and counter-action does not help the civil society. "Hatred cannot be taken away with counter hatred," he said.

Without naming Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Khorakiwala said that talking of "Hindu bomb" and 'Hindu suicide squads" will only lead to civil war. "It is wrong to associate violence and terrorism with any religion," he said.

"Politicians want us to remain divided for their own ends. we have to see through their agenda," he said.

Screwvala said the spirit of unanimity in the civil society can dispel terrorism.

"A signature campaign is  strong and symbolic gesture," he added.

He said moving pictures communicate the message of communal harmony very strongly. "UTV has been associated with films like 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Aamir' and now the upcoming 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' and 'Wednesday' which strongly creates awareness of the need of peace and harmony in the society," he added.
