Their first book will be released on footpath over cutting chai and vada pav

PUNE: The world of glamour has its own rules. Aspiring writers know how tough it is to get their works published. Bearing this in mind, some activists joined hands and started Pavement Publishers in Mumbai. Their unconventional style of releasing books on footpaths over ‘cutting chai’ and vada-pav will soon come to Pune.

They will publish a novel penned by ex-IITian & Wipro manager Prashant Karhade in the second week of June. It will be released by an activist working for the welfare of commercial sex workers and their HIV-affected children.

Dr Shailendra Vaishampayan, the activist leading the publishing movement along with its editor Chaittaranjan, visited the city on Sunday. They met with with Karhade and the chief guest of the proposed function, Anil Kudia ‘Nagari’.

Karhade’s book, Memory Remains, will be released on the footpath at Narpatgir Chowk in Somwar Peth.

Vaishampayan told DNA that a large number of publishers demand money, contacts with film stars or politicians to publish budding writers’ books. These publishers say that no one buys a book if it is not endorsed by a politician, a film star or a boyfriend of a film star.

Prashant Karhade had a similar experience. He went to three big publishers without any success. One of them demanded Rs 3 lakh. Incidentally, Karhade’s mother contacted a host of a TV programme, who informed her about Pavement Publishers.

Pavement Publishers’ first book Saturn & I was written by Vaishampayan and was released on a Mumbai footpath.

Noted dietician and writer Malati Karwarkar has approached Pavement Publishers and will soon revise one of her books on sportpersons’ diet in English and ask Pavement to publish it.
