Shanti Sagar has moved sessions court for anticipatory bail

MUMBAI: Shanti Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar who produced the popular television serial Ramayan, has moved the sessions court for anticipatory bail in the case where he is alleged to have duped a man who purchased his flat of over Rs70 lakh.

The complainant, Dr Shrikant Kalmunkar, who trades in surgical implements had bought a 1800-sq feet commercial premise in Shanti’s new construction Siddhant Complex, located in Andheri (E). According to Dr Kalmunkar’s complaint with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Crime Branch, an agreement of Rs17 lakhs was signed in May 2004 and Rs 54.5 lakhs was paid in cash.

Principal judge Ashok Bhangale has given Shanti and Singh interim protection from arrest till April 3 when it will come up for hearing.

In August 2006, Shanti allegedly demolished the premise bought by Dr Kalmunkar and would give evasive replies on enquiries made by Dr Kalmunkar. Dr Kalmunkar then moved the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through Right to Information (RTI) and found that Shanti, in April 2006, had sought permission to convert the commercial area bought by Dr Kalmunkar into a parking lot by allegedly using forged documents.

As per the complaint recorded by the EOW, Shanti submitted consent papers by one Dr Rajendra Tripathi and Dr JK Rai to facilitate demolition of Dr Kalmunkar’s property. As per the procedure, before the demolition of any plot and change of plan, the consent of the owner of the property is necessary. According to Dr Kalmunkar, the addresses of Dr Tripthi and Dr Rai in the official consent papers were incomplete.

The EOW this month registered a case of forgery, cheating and criminal breach of trust against Shanti, the director of Amar Pratik Builders and the manager of the firm, Arjun Singh.
