On taking up Nagin
For starters, there are too many saas-bahu shows. Right now, the trend is of reality shows and costume dramas.
The latter especially are doing well like Alladin and Ramayan because they are the tried and tested formula. So when I got the offer for Nagin, I said yes immediately. But I am not playing a naag (laughs).
My character is that of this flamboyant, happy-go-lucky guy. He falls in love with the nagin and stands by her when he learns that she is not a normal woman. It’s an interesting role.
On handling snakes
I was in for a huge shock when I attended the shoot of Nagin. I was told to lie down while a real live snake would roll over me.
Obviously, I was petrified but relented because there were trained people around me. But honestly, when the scene began, I was numb. Later, I even held it in my hand.
On his aversion to saas-bahu shows
I am not saying that saas-bahu shows are passe – of course they have an audience. But there’s an overdose of it and the trend is slowly but surely changing.
I am going by the trend and only speaking for the moment. Perhaps I will take on a show like that if the trend is in its favour.
On his success
I owe it to Ekta Kapoor. It was she who cast me in Kanyadaan. I was terrible at that time and would give at least 30 retakes.
I thought acting was only mouthing dialogues in front of the camera. Also my Hindi was atrocious. Naturally, I got replaced after just 3-4 episodes. I worked on myself in the interim period till I got Shagun. But it was my negative act in Saat Phere which got me a lot of recognition.
On his business
Acting for me was just a hobby but gradually it has become a full-time profession. That’s the reason I am taking on lesser responsibilities at our family business of construction and realty.
On his girlfriend
I am involved with this girl about whom I will talk when the time is right.
