Police face flak for ‘maligning’ slain teen’s character

NEW DELHI: Friends, schoolmates and people who never knew Aarushi while she was alive have come together seeking justice for the slain Noida teenager. While hundreds of students of Delhi Public School (Noida) took to the roads on Tuesday, an online campaign for the 14-year-old is gaining momentum too.

The community titled ‘RIP Aarushi’ created by her friends on a social networking site already has 7,500 members since it was launched on May 16, the day her murder was discovered. Though most of them were not known to Aarushi, what binds them is shock at the way her life was snuffed out and a strong determination to see her killer punished.

Aarushi was found brutally murdered at her Noida residence days before her 14th birthday. Her father Dr Rajesh Talwar is now behind bars, accused of killing his own daughter and domestic help Hemraj.

Friends and schoolmates of the girl carried out a 2-km ‘Justice for Aarushi’ march from their school to her Sector 25 residence. They waved banners demanding justice for their friend and lit candles in her memory.

The youngsters criticised the “gross allegations” levelled against the teenaged girl who “was no longer there to defend herself”. Gurdarshan Singh, inspector general of police (Meerut range), had said, “On the night of the murder, Rajesh saw Aarushi and Hemraj in an objectionable but not compromising condition.”

Reacting vociferously to the allegations, her friends said “the cops should have substantial evidence before making such tainting comments against a girl who was so brutally murdered.”

The students also criticised the media for “buying the maligning theories” of the police and “thus indulging in character assassination of Aarushi.”

“The fight for justice for Aarushi has just begun. We will not sit silently and tolerate what the police are doing. We will fight till the end,” said Aarushi’s friend Fiza.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) also lambasted the police for “maligning the dead girl’s character.”

“We have served the Uttar Pradesh police a notice. They have 15 days to explain why they claimed Aarushi was seen in an ‘objectionable’ position with Hemraj on the night of the murder,” said NCPCR member Sandhya Bajaj,

“The commission wants to know how the revelations of her proximity with the domestic help have helped the case. The cops need to show us evidence that corroborates this outrageous claim,” she said.
