Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has appointed Consulting Engineering Services (India) to make an in-depth study of the bus rapid transit system (BRTS), thereby making its intentions clear that it has no plans to put it in the backburner. BRTS is considered as a non-starter of sorts in both New Delhi and Pune, the only two Indian cities to launch the scheme.
In sharp contrast, MMRDA is planning what will probably be the country’s biggest BRTS, for the entire metropolitan region including Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayander and few other urban satellite pockets of Mumbai. The first phase of the study will include finding the scope of region-wide network of BRTS, possible corridors and their extensions in and around city. The second phase will have emphasis on preparation of detailed design for priority corridors with proper earmarking of traffic norms and signalling.
