Delhi Police collect a whopping Rs9.57 lakh as fine for drunken driving on Holi day

NEW DELHI: All that bhang and liquor guzzling by denizens of Delhi on Holi seems to have showered big bucks on cops in the national capital. And contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t because the cops got a chance to pocket hefty bribes for letting drunken revellers go scot-free.

Cracking down on those driving in an inebriated state, Delhi Police fined an unprecedented 319 people on March 22 for drunk driving, making their treasury swell by a whopping Rs9.57 lakh. There is a fine of Rs3,000 for drunk driving in the capital.

Revellers returning from Holi parties were in for a rude surprise as Delhi Police decided to step up their campaign against drunk driving. As opposed to the usual 10 or 12 cases of people being fined for drunk driving, a whopping 319 people were booked for the offence on Holi. A day later, the figure rose to 402.

Other traffic violations such as over-speeding, jumping signals and rash driving too were registered. The traffic police booked 952 people for over-speeding and 456 for rash and negligent driving. Nearly 500 were booked for jumping signals.

“This has certainly been a very successful crackdown. Cases of drunken driving rise manifold on Holi as a lot of people consume bhang and other intoxicants and hit the road. We are happy our drive yielded result and hope people understand there are traffic rules that need to be followed,” said joint commissioner (traffic) SN Shrivastav. He said the drive will continue.

Taking a cue from their counterparts in Mumbai, Delhi Police also sent about 10 people behind bars for rash and negligent driving and driving in an inebriated state.

“Traffic rule violations will not be allowed. People must learn to abide by rules laid down for their safety and the safety of others walking or driving on roads,” Shrivastav said.

A senior police officer said Rs9.57 lakh will be collected by the cops when people appear in courts against their challan, and this fine is being collected only for one offence on a single day. With 2,129 other traffic offences being registered over the weekend, Delhi Police can expect several more lakhs from fines!
