Former minister A Narendra set to merge his TSS with BSP

HYDERABAD: Former union minister Aelay Narendra is all set to jump on to the Maya bandwagon in Andhra Pradesh. A long-time BJP leader in AP, and later the second-in-command in the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS), Narendra on Thursday announced he will merge his Telengana Sadhana Samiti (TSS) with BSP in the state.

The Telangana leader was expelled from the TRS some months ago following differences with party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao over his alleged involvement in a human trafficking racket of smuggling of young Gujarati women to Canada, Australia and UK.

Narendra had won the Medak parliamentary seat, which was earlier held by Indira Gandhi in 1984, on BJP ticket. He formed TSS after he broke away from the BJP in 2001, and in 2002 merged it with TRS. After being elected from Medak again, he became a union minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet. However, in 2006 both Chandrasekhara Rao and Narendra resigned from the UPA on grounds of indecision by the government over the delivery of its electoral promise to create Telangana. In the ensuing by-elections in Karimnagar, Rao got re-elected for the third time.

Narendra’s announcement to merge with BSP comes ahead of UP chief minister Mayawati’s trip to Hyderabad on January 5. “I will merge TSS with BSP on January 5”, he told presspersons on Thursday. “I am in touch with her and have already written to her about my intentions to join her party as BSP is clearly in favour of formation of Telengana,” he added.

The state president of BSP Nalla Suryaprakash has welcomed Narendra’s interest in the party and said: “I hope he will be an asset to the party and play a significant role for its promotion in AP.” Suryaprakash said  BSP had a staunch following in each of the assembly segments.

On reports of actor Chiranjeevi’s entry into politics through the BSP, the party leader said that: “His brother discussed Chiranjeevi’s political status with us. But Chiranjeevi himself is in touch with our national leaders only.”
