The Central Bureau of Investigation registered a case on Wednesday against a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) working for the organisation and an appraiser working with the Mumbai customs.

The agency also conducted searches at seven places and recovered several ‘incriminating’ documents.

CBI spokesman B Gaur said a case was registered on the allegation that DSP DK Barik had been taking favours from Ravindra Kumar, as appraiser in the customs department. Kumar is an accused in two corruption cases being investigated by the CBI.

On inquiry, the CBI found that Kumar had been financing the travel of Gaur and his family members and relations to various places in the country.

Expenditure in lakhs was incurred on these journeys. The expenditure included the purchase of air tickets as well as boarding and lodging. All the expenditure was incurred in a short period.

According to the first information report registered by the CBI, the DSP had been returning the favour to the customs appraiser by passing on information relating to the developments in the cases against him.

“The DSP was also found to have used his personal influence with senior Customs officers for the transfer of the appraiser from Delhi to Mumbai, which was effected within a day,” an official CBI note said.
