MUMBAI: Hyderabad-based 24x7guru.com, which helps students between classes 3 and 10 prepare better for their examinations by offering mock tests on various subjects, will soon reach out to students enrolled under state boards.

Hitherto, its services were available only to students pursuing the CBSE curriculum.

To start with, it would address students readying for board exams in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, K S Muralidhar, CEO, Learnsmart, told DNA Money on the sidelines of ‘Destination NASA’, a talent hunt.

24X7 has set itself a target of 2 million subscribers by the end of academic year 2009 and wants to double it by 2010. The website is a joint effort of Unified Council’s education content and BodhTree’s online diagnostic and assessment engine aimed at helping students study more efficiently, and evaluate their progress on a real time basis and scale.

Bodhtree has investments and interests in new technology businesses such as e-publishing (pressmart.net), e-learning (24x7guru.com) and mobile classified search. “With the help of the portal, the students can focus their attention on weak spots before they take an exam,” said Muralidhar.

According to him, students can evaluate themselves at regular intervals by taking tests on the subjects they study in school. 24x7guru.com would then evaluate those answers and demonstrate to the students their strengths and weaknesses. Such a process complements the efforts of teachers in schools and puts students in a confident frame of mind.

Experts believe the success of these initiatives will depend on the broadband penetration, which is less than 1% in the home segment in India.

A student can take a maximum of 45 tests over the duration of a year’s subscription at prices ranging from Rs 3.50 to Rs 6 per day for different classes.  The site also provides instant feedback on scoring, as well as diagnostic reports that can be used by students and their parents for evaluating the learning curve.

Other online coaching and test assessment companies catering to school students in the country include extramarks.com, learninghour.com and mathguru.com.

Meanwhile, 24x7guru.com’s ‘Destination NASA’ campaign will run across 13 cities. In Phase 1, over 1 million students from 880 schools are likely to participate in the 30 minute online tests based on the curriculum. The top 10 winners will get to visit the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
