The glimpses of the Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati’s the mammoth rally, the first in the city, reveal that youth are more engrossed by the charishma of the firebrand lady.

With Mayawati’s rally in Vidarbha in the recent past having evoked good response, the BSP has already made its inroads in the backward region of the state where farmers’ suicides and infant deaths amongst adivasis.

The BSP has gripped youth from Vidarbha, the dalit-dominated territory and also the bastion of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh that has headquarters in Nagpur.

A huge group of nearly 5,000 party workers, comprising youngsters in the age group upto 35 had straight way come from remote district of Gadchiroli. Rajesh Lingayat, 34, a graduate, said that the new generation cadre from his district is all for BSP. The youth feel that they were ignored by the other parties.

Gangadhar Gade, former minister and a close associate of RPI leader and MP Athawale said he has taken responsibility for the party in Marathwada. It is gathering strength in many districts in the region. He claimed that majority of the party workers in the age group of 17 to 25.

Ravindra Pawar, 28, is the party’s sector president of the Ramanagar in Aurangabad and former worker of RPI, the Ramdas Athawale faction. He said many workers from other parties like Congress, Shiv Sena, Dalit Panther and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh have joined the BSP recently.

Mohammed Bhai from Mangalwar Peth in Pune is a supporter of former Congress leader Sadanand Shetty who has joined the BSP. Nearly 500 of Shetty’s followers were in the city for last two days for the rally preparations. His fellow worker Sunil Dogre said they were feeling suffocated in Congress.

BSP’s North Mumbai district president PN Tripathi claimed that he is getting enormous calls from other party workers wanting to join the party.

“More than 30 per cent of the population from the North Mumbai is with our party. After the grand success of the rally, thousands of more people from other parties will join us,” he claimed.
