L&T had inaugurated a state-of-the-art factory for low voltage switchgear at Wuxi in the Jiangsu province in east China in October last year.
Set up as a wholly owned subsidiary of India's largest switchgear manufacturer, Larsen & Toubro (Wuxi) Electric Company Limited (LTW) is the first manufacturing facility in the electrical sector outside India.
Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, A M Naik recently said that the company's new initiatives abroad will accelerate L&T's thrust towards its target of achieving 25 per cent of revenues from international business.
L&T has set up the new production facilities for valves business in Yangcheng city in Jiangsu Province in east China and the rubber machinery unit in Jionan near Qingdao, in Shandong Province.
Late last year, L&T had won two major contracts of an aggregate value of 86 million US dollars from the leading Chinese petrochemical company Sinopec.
L&T has also been contracted to design, manufacture and supply of three ethylene oxide reactors, each weighing in excess of 1000 tonnes. The reactors will form part of the Methyl Ethyl Glycol (MEG) unit in a petrochemical plant.
Secured against intense competition from Japanese and German firms, these orders reflect the strong credibility built by L&T in international markets for high technology manufacture, company sources said.
In the last two years, L&T has supplied to China equipment valued over 300 million US dollars, including the world's largest coal gasifier, and advanced acronitrile reactors.
L&T is among the few companies in the world which has been approved by the Chinese Heavy Industry Ministry with SQL certification for supply of critical equipment.
