NEW DELHI: Following the ‘fake’ sting operation carried out by India Live on Delhi mathematics teacher Uma Khurana who allegedly pushed girl students into prostitution, Editor-in-Chief CNN-IBN Rajdeep Sardesai felt that the media industry should evolve its own code for regulating content before the government steps in .

Sardesai said it was imperative for broadcasters to evolve a code of conduct to protect the credibility of TV journalism.  Reacting to the sting hoax by

India Live, Sardesai called for tough laws to punish fake operations but defended stings as a legitimate form of journalism.

“I believe sting operations are justified in certain circumstances, particularly because ours is an opaque society. One sting gone wrong should not be used to condemn the entire genre,” he said.

He felt that this particular episode had highlighted the need for strong editorial filters in each channel to monitor and assess stories so that there is no ethical violation.

“We need strong editors who will monitor each and every story. We can’t pass the buck to the reporter and absolve the channel. The channel is as responsible,” he pointed out.

He said that broadcasters are already seized of the issue and have been discussing it for the past couple of months. “We need to do something sooner than later otherwise the government will do it for us,” he warned.

He also suggested the government appointing an independent regulator on the lines of the advertising standards council of India to ensure adherence to a code of conduct. But broadcasters themselves should evolve the code so that journalistic freedom is protected, he added.
