The model turned actor says that though he loves doing offbeat cinema, TV helps him survive

After Ashwini Kalsekar entered ‘Parrivar— Kartavya Ki Pariksha’ (Zee) recently, it is model-turned-actor Diwakar Pundir, who is set to enter the show. Diwakar will play Shourya Shergill, owner of the hospital where the protagonist Radha (Deepti Devi) works. Apparently, Diwakar was roped in to boost the dipping TRPs.

Diwakar has done several shows on television including ‘Reth’, ‘Sinndoor’ and ‘Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye’. Despite that, the actor is not seen much. Diwakar says, “That is because I do one show at a time. Some of them are not even on primetime.”

A popular model once, Diwakar has met with little success as a film actor. Apparently, some of his films have been lying in the cans and others, being small budget ones, have gone unnoticed. And when he bagged a role in Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don’, his role got edited. “It really feels bad when that happens because your efforts go waste. But nothing can be done in an age where economics precedes creativity,” he rues.

Of the several films that Diwakar has acted in, most have been offbeat. He says, “I like to do realistic cinema. But the fate of such films is unpredictable because they are commercially unviable. One is not sure if they will see the light of day.”

For someone who loves interesting cinema, how does he fit into TV dramas? Diwakar laughs, “It’s a tough decision. But one has to compromise to survive,” adding, “Frustration is bound to seep in. But I deal with it by keeping myself engaged in different activities. I don’t stick to just one medium. Moreover, I socialise a lot. That recharges my enthusiasm.”

Diwakar also intends taking up direction. “I am writing some scripts. My friends and I want to direct short stories,” he shares.
