DHAKA: Having cracked a composed ton to leave behind his bitter memories of a pair of ducks in the first Test, a jubilant Indian opener Wasim Jaffer on Friday said he came to bat with an "extra bit of determination" to get a good score.

"It is nice to get a hundred in Test cricket, especially to come back and get one after a pair," Jaffer told reporters after the opening day's play against Bangladesh.

"I am always determined no matter what the result is. It was that extra bit determined after getting that pair. Obviously, getting a pair is not a nice feeling. I was determined to get a good score and I am very happy," he said after he was retired hurt for 138.

Jaffer had nausea and dehydration after batting in the gruelling hot and humid condition for 272 minutes.

"Conditions are very tough as you can see. I and Karthick had to come back due to cramps," Jaffer said.

Karthick, who had cramps, could also not come back to bat after tea with his personal score on 82.

The Mumbai right-hander, however, parried a question on if the players should refuse to play under such conditions.

"Playing or not playing is not in my hands; it is up to the BCCI or Bangladesh Cricket Board to decide to play when and where."

Jaffer thanked the team management for backing him despite his pair in the Chittagong Test.

"I am delighted that the team management was behind me. They backed me after the first Test and if there backing was not there I would not have been playing this game and get this result," Jaffer said.

He said team manager Ravi Shastri had asked him to be more positive and not to worry about the pair."

Shastri was telling me to be more positive in mind. "Do not worry about the past as such things happen to everybody. Openers will have to play the new ball and that too when the conditions are tough. You have to just go there and give your best".

Jaffer said his friendship with Karthick stood the pair in good stead during their stint in the middle.

"Dinesh and I are opening for the last three Tests and we got a hundred partnership in Cape Town. We are good friends and it helps when you bat together," he said.

Asked about the performance of the Bangladesh bowlers, who had to return wickeless, Jaffer replied "wickets are not supporting Bangladesh bowlers, but they were trying their best".
