GUWAHATI: One person was killed and 14 others injured when a bomb carried by two ULFA militants exploded in Kumarpara area, minutes before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in the city to lay the foundation stone of a bridge over the Brahmaputra on Sunday.

Police said the ULFA militants were riding a motorcycle, and lost their balance when it went over a speed breaker at high speed and fell down, making the bomb go off near gate number six beside Kumarpara mosque under Bharalu police station at about 5:45 pm.

The explosion killed the bomb carrying militant, who was identified as Ainul Ali, while 14 others, including the other militant, were seriously injured.

The site of the bomb blast was not in the route which was to be taken by the Prime Minister on his way to the area where the foundation stone laying ceremony of the second bridge over the Brahmaputra near the city was held. It was also not on his planned route to the Raj Bhawan where he is scheduled to spend the night.

Meanwhile, another bomb was exploded by ULFA in the commercial hub of Upper Assam's Jorhat district on Sunday night, official sources in Jorhat said.

However, none was injured in the blast.

The improvised explosive device (IED) planted under a truck went off around 9.45 pm at Baruani Baat commercial area of the town.

The explosion did not cause large scale damage as it was raining and there was not too many people in the area as most of the business establishments were closed for the night, the sources said. The area has been cordoned off.
