Fourteen Pak policemen suspended for attack on TV channel

A government announcement late on Friday night here said that Inspector Khalid Mehmood and 13 constables of Punjab province have been suspended pending an inquiry.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government has suspended 14 policemen for their alleged involvement in the attack on journalists during the raid on the offices of the country's biggest private broadcaster Geo TV.

A government announcement late on Friday night here said that Inspector Khalid Mehmood and 13 constables of Punjab province have been suspended pending an inquiry.

The government has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Additional District Sessions Judge, Islamabad, Manzoor Ahmed Mirza would conduct the inquriy. He has been asked to fix responsibility and recommend action against those involved in the action against the channel.

Police yesterday raided the offices of Geo TV, which had come under tremendous pressure from the establishment over
its covergae of the suspended Chief Justice Iftikar Muhammad Chaudhry, and beat up journalists.

Soon after the incident, President Pervez Musharraf condemned the raid as an act of "sabotage" against his government and apologised to the channel.

"It is a very regrettable incident. It is a very unfortunate incident, I condemn it in stronget terms," Musharraf said.
