Are you excited about judging ‘Indian Idol 3’?

I’m excited and nervous as I’ve not done something like this before. I’m a bit apprehensive about coming across as blunt and hard-hitting. Plus, I don’t speak Hindi too well but I’ve been told by the organisers that this will not be a problem as I could speak a bit of English on the show too.

So, will you be as nice a judge as Paula Abdul (of ‘American Idol’)?

I can’t be sweet and nice about it. If a contestant is tone deaf I would have to be honest, as I wouldn’t want to lead them down the wrong path. I will soften the blow though.

What according to you are the qualities of a true Indian idol?

For me, a true Indian idol is someone who has the four Cs – creative talent, consistency, chart-topping ability and of course, charisma. You can’t be just a good singer. Take me, for example – there are so many people with better voices than mine, but I’ve still managed to make it. You’ve got be a true diva.

Given your troubled history with Anu Mallik (one of the three judges on the show), will we see fireworks between you two?

We haven’t started shooting yet, but after ‘Kajra Re’ I feel like I can get on top of any situation. So who knows – it might be fun!

You sound like you’re looking forward to working with him again…

Hey, we’re all being paid for our discomfort. And, at the end of the day, we are professionals who cannot always avoid working with each other.

Are you working on any other project besides this?

Yes. My new album tentatively titled AC (Alisha Chinoy) and produced by Ravi Pal in UK, will be out in April. It’s going to be about love with a hip-hop edge to it.
