LUCKNOW: Congress Party’s uncrowned prince Rahul Gandhi has decreed a trial by fire for top party leaders of UP. Almost all senior party leaders have been asked to contest the upcoming state assembly elections under a novel gameplan devised by Rahul, who has apparently assumed full control of the party’s strategy for the UP elections.
“Rahulji’s plan is ingenious ,” says Ashok Vajpayee, chief spokesman of the UP Congress Committee (UPCC). He said the innovative scheme could bring “unexpected results”. State unit vice-president Satyadev Tripathi agreed, saying judicious ticket distribution under direct supervision of Rahul and Soniaji would mean “half the battle won”.
Party insiders reveal that Rahul is in the process of personally sounding out every party leader for the state polls. The list includes the UPCC president Salman Khursheed and minister of state for steel Akhilesh Das. The latter has also been directed to contest a seat from Lucknow but he managed to wriggle out. However, Rahul enjoined upon him the task of ensuring victory in two Lucknow polls. Interestingly, several of the party’s leaders, being virtually jostled into the electoral battle-field, are past or present MPs or were nursing ambitions of a parliamentary debut. But sources say Rahul’s list is being prepared regardless of these leaders’ stature or self-professed seniority.
“This action plan will expose party leaders who have no mass base, who do not work at the grassroots level and do not bring in votes … egos of such leaders would be deflated,” said a party leader, adding in the long run this would definitely brighten Congress’ prospects in UP.
Insiders told DNA that as part of Rahul’s strategy, the party would focus on 150 seats where Congress had a fair chance of victory.
