Cadres go into raptures, burst crackers and vow by Bal Thackeray’s charisma
It was a hat-trick for the saffron alliance. They made no bones about it. The moment they learnt about the impending results in the elections to the BMC, Shiv Sainiks flocked the streets and started their celebration. Matoshree, the residence of Bal Thackeray and the power centre, was teeming with party workers.
Winning candidates took out rallies in open jeeps, supporters burst crackers, and raised slogans in support of their supremo. A Sena activist’s 5-year-old Tripti was the cynosure of all eyes when she kept waving saffron flags.
They often raised slogans like Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji and Balasaheb angaar hai, baaki sab bhangaar hai. (Balasaheb is fire, all others are junk), Shiv Senacha vijay asso (victory to Shiv Sena). Sweets were distributed to all who assembled for the celebrations.
Not to be left behind, women Sainiks wore saffron sarees. They were heard shouting slogans against Rane and Raj.
Senior leader Manohar Joshi, Sanjay Raut, Sada Sarvankar, Anil Parab, Deepak Sawant rushed to Matoshree once it became clear that the saffron alliance would capture the BMC. Young Sena leaders such as Abhijeet Panase, Prashant Kakade and Samadhan Sarvankar were seen dancing with saffron flag in their hands at the Sena Bhawan.
At 12.30, Sena’s first official winning candidate Jyoti Bhosale visited Matoshree to seek the blessings. Vishwanat Mahadeshwar and Sanjay Potnis followed.
Mediapersons, too, tried to enter Matoshree to get that “quotable quote” of the Shiv Sena chief. But the police intervened soon and vacated scribes from the premises.
All victorious candidates were asked to come to Matoshree at 7pm. The Sena chief appeared at the window of Matoshree showing victory signs to Sainiks.
The crowd went up in delirium. Sada Sarvankar, Shiv Sena MLA from Dadar in Central Mumbai, said, “Raj’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has made no impact in Mumbai. His office is the only presence in our area and he has no followers.”
