Suspected ISI agent arrested in Varanasi

VARANASI: A suspected agent of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence was arrested from a cyber cafe while transmitting vital military and strategic documents to his operatives across the border, a senior police official said on Thursday.

Javed Akhtar, a native of Allahabad district, was arrested by the special task force and police from the Eyeway Cafe near Bhojubir locality here at 9.45 pm on Wednesday night and vital documents of military and strategic importance and other materials recovered from his possession, Senior Superintendent of Police Sujit Pandey told reporters here.

The 48-year-old agent had received extensive training from the ISI operatives to carry out subversive and anti-national activities in India and visited Pakistan thrice and was well versed with the technological know-how required for collecting vital strategic information and its transmission to his operatives, he said.

The investigators have recovered vital documents like map of the Harish Chandra Atomic Centre in Allahabad, documents related to the purchase of T-90 tanks, details of airshow at Bangalore, documents of the plans to check militancy, movement of troops in Jalandhar last year, the SSP said.

The documents related to infrastructure like length of the under-construction bridge in Amritsar, under-construction project of railway track between Shankargarh (UP) to Satna (Madhya Pradesh), construction of railway track in Ballia district, electrification project between Jaunpur and Amethi and the purchase of land by the DRDO in Varanasi district, were also seized from him, Pandey said.
