Former India captain says he is confident the BCCI will handle his case in the right way

MUMBAI: Mohammad Azharuddin says he will not appeal to the International Cricket Council to lift his ban. Speaking exclusively to DNA here on Monday, Azhar said he has complete faith on the Board of Control for Cricket in India and is confident the BCCI would handle his case in the proper way. “It’s up to the BCCI. I’ll not write to the ICC,” said the former captain.

Refusing to discuss on the prospect of his life ban being lifted, the former India captain said: “I don’t dwell in the past. I always look forward for good things in life. There are times when people say things that are not to your liking. That is part of life. I live for today and look forward to tomorrow with a positive mind. I was always sure that one day my contribution to the country would be recognised. I am thankful to the BCCI for all that they are doing.”

Azhar said he was also looking forward to the BBCI function on November 4 to which he has been invited.

He said he’s pained by the recent results of the Indian team. “It’s sad that we could not make it at least to the semifinal stage in our own backyard. The team is not focused enough and is there is no proper direction. Their body language is not encouraging. The potential is there but it is not delivering the results.”

Azhar felt the captain is not being assertive enough. “I know Rahul well. He used to have a say in the team matters even when he was not the captain. But of late, I feel he is not doing so.”

The Hyderabad batsman, who played in 99 Tests for India, bemoaned the lack of consistency in the team. “There is no consistency. Tendulkar today, Sehwag tomorrow and thereafter someone else... Something has to be done on the consistency factor.”

The former skipper felt Mohammad Kaif is not delivering the goods. “When I watch him in action, I recall my playing days. He is the best fielder in the side. But to be in the team it is not enough be merely a good fielder. Batting should come first and fielding is a bonus.”

Azhar was not very happy with the experimentation. “Experiments are welcome but not when the team is in crisis. Unfortunately, that is what is happening with our team. See the Australians, they too experiment but not when the team is down. They undertake this exercise when the team is having a cozy ride.”
