Did you ever think ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ (Star World) would be such a hit?

The runaway success of the show feels sweet because no one had predicted it. Halfway through our shooting schedule, we had stopped for eight days to redo its style. Then we didn’t have an airdate for a very long time. So it’s great that our show is a huge success.

Is  ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ your big break?

This is an undeniably exciting time in my life. But it’s been a gradual process of building blocks.

Do you relate to your character Cristina Yang?

What I liked about playing Cristina is that I didn’t feel like her. I wanted to discover her. Prickly yet insecure, Cristina is known for her less-than-winning  manners. She’s staunchly opposed to hugging patients and has great ambition. Cristina is an example of opposites. Even though she’s brusque, she’s also compassionate. It’s interesting to see someone who is extremely competent on one hand, which is her job, and extremely incompetent on the other, which is relating to people.

How was it working with co-star Isaiah Washington?

I did a film ‘Double Happiness’ in 1995. The film ‘Clockers’ (which featured Washington) was released at the same time. I was featured in ‘Interview’ magazine and I saw this really cute guy named Isaiah Washington being featured in the same. I followed his career and eventually got to work together. That was really great!

Do you plan to return to your first love theatre?

I plan to return to theatre with ‘Satellites,’ a new play by Diana Son in New York. The stage is where I first learnt to act. I am eager to stretch those muscles again. I want to establish a good relationship with theatre.
