MUMBAI: Three Indian film talents have so far been selected to participate in the Cannes film festival that takes place from May 17-28.

These include director Dev Benegal, producer Sunil Doshi and Anirban Datta, a student of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata.

Anirban Datta's diploma film 'Tetris' has been selected by the Cinefondation section for film school entries. "I am thrilled to represent India at Cannes," said Datta.

"Tetris is a digital game, but my film is also about writing a film. I had no expectations when making it. Since it was made without commercial gain in mind, it was a chance to try things I may never get again," he added.

He follows on the heels of Tridib Poddar, also from the SRFTI, whose student film 'Khoj' was selected by Cannes in 2002. Dev Benegal will make a presentation on his forthcoming film 'Road Movie' in the festival's Atelier (Studio) section, which helps filmmakers develop their film, as well as find finance.

"I wrote 'Road Movie' as an adventure, a journey of self-discovery. Little did I imagine it would get chosen for this prestigious event. It's a simple story but profound in its view of human life and survival in an age of globalization," he said.

Sunil Doshi will present his 'Mixed Doubles', directed by Rajat Kapoor, at the Pavillon du Sud (South Pavilion), which supports films from southern continents. Doshi, whose Handmade Films produced 'Mixed Doubles' and 'Navarasa', said: "I will also present a script for 'The World According to Sam Hussain', an allegory on the US-Iraq war, which I will direct myself."

According to Mohamed Bendjebbour, Audiovisual Attaché at the French Embassy in India , which has supported the participation of the three Indians at Cannes, "These talents highlight how Indian Cinema is going global, and Cannes is the best platform to showcase this."
